Brian Gribben: Leaving a Legacy

by Jonathan van Bilsen

There is something exciting about seeing a new business take root in Scugog, especially when it brings fresh energy to downtown Port Perry. Though Gribben Insurance is no newcomer to the industry, their move to the corner of Perry and Mary Streets marks an exciting new chapter. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Gribben, the founder and driving force behind this insurance and financial planning enterprise, which has been serving clients for an impressive 40 years.

Brian’s journey began far from Scugog, in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His early years were shaped by the challenges of a turbulent environment, which prompted his family to seek a new life in Canada. At the age of six, Brian and his family left Belfast behind, and settled in Agincourt, Ontario. His father transitioned from running a furniture and appliance store, to building a career in life insurance, a profession that became a frequent topic of discussion at home. These conversations sparked Brian’s interest in the field, setting the stage for his own career in the industry.

By the time Brian turned 21, he had earned his licence to sell insurance, and began his career with London Life. Even during his high school years, Brian displayed entrepreneurial talent. From working at McDonald’s to running a small business offering wallpapering, lawn care, and snow shovelling services, he was already laying the groundwork for his future.

After a couple of years with London Life, Brian moved to Great-West Life, where he embraced the freedom of being an independent representative. This role allowed him to offer a broader range of financial products to clients, honing his skills and expanding his reach.

Four years ago, Brian and his wife Lorraine, also a licensed professional in the industry, decided to make Port Perry their permanent home, after nine years of enjoying life at their cottage in the area. Like many during the pandemic, they adapted their business model, working from home and closing their Kingston Road office. As the world settled into a new rhythm, Brian and Lorraine saw an opportunity to re-establish their physical presence in the heart of Port Perry.

The decision to open an office downtown was a testament to their commitment to the community. Their ambitious goal of growing the business by 20 percent annually has not only been met but exceeded.

Beyond their professional success, Brian and Lorraine have also made community involvement a priority. Over the past three years, they have hosted the BGIP Summer Spectacular at Trillium Trails, a fundraiser for the Port Perry Hospital Foundation, which reflects their dedication to giving back.

The event, an evening filled with dinner and entertainment is a fantastic experience where guests can enjoy themselves while supporting a great cause. Last year, this fabulous gathering attracted 120 guests and raised $60,000. That money went straight to buying two portable defibrillators for the Port Perry Hospital's emergency department. This year the firm surpassed its goal, and has become a staple in the hospital’s ongoing fundraising efforts.

While financial, tax and estate planning form the foundation of their services, Brian emphasizes the importance of community engagement and creating a lasting legacy. His passion for helping clients, particularly those planning for retirement, is evident in the tailored approach he and his team provide.

The firm includes a talented group of eight advisors who split their time between investment counselling and insurance planning. Small businesses also benefit from their expertise, with specialized offerings such as disability insurance and business interruption coverage. “Our strength lies in our ability to tailor solutions to meet the specific needs of our clients,” Brian shared, highlighting the firm’s focus on personalized service.

Recognizing the evolving nature of business and technology, Gribben Insurance has embraced digital platforms and social media to reach new audiences. A recently launched website showcases the full range of services available, ensuring their offerings are accessible to a wider demographic. While referrals have traditionally driven the business, Brian acknowledges the importance of adapting to changing times, and catering to the preferences of younger generations.

Outside the office, Brian and Lorraine enjoy an active family life filled with travel. With children spread across the globe - from Cape Town, South Africa, to Sudbury, Orillia, and Vancouver - they have plenty of reasons to explore. Florida is a regular winter destination, and their passion for cruising has taken them to stunning locales, including the Greek Islands. A recent cruise was particularly special, bringing the entire family together for the first time in nearly a decade.

Meeting Brian was a reminder of the impact a dedicated entrepreneur can have on a community. His commitment to serving clients with integrity, supporting local initiatives, and fostering meaningful connections, speaks volumes about his character and values.

For those in need of insurance or financial planning services, or simply looking for sound advice from a seasoned professional, a visit to Gribben Insurance is well worth considering. Whether you explore their website at bgip.ca or stop by their welcoming office in Port Perry, Brian and Lorraine’s expertise and friendly approach are sure to make a lasting impression.
