Blackstock news

by Janet Van Camp

Sunday, August 18th promises to be a busy day in Blackstock as the Lake Scugog Historical Society is setting up a historical exhibit in the Blackstock United Church starting at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and learn more about the history of our community.

A visit to the Methodist cemetery across the street at 1:30 p.m. will be quite fascinating as Paul Arculus and Janis Carter share the stories of some of the early pioneers resting there. Paul will then lead the group to the four corners in town to share the early history of this area. The afternoon will conclude back at the Church where the new self-guided driving tour of this area will be launched. Thanks to John Churchill for his help on this project. Refreshments and a social time to follow. Hope to see you there.

The annual Blackstock Fair and Demolition Derby is taking place on Saturday, August 24th with buildings open at 9 a.m. There will be lots to see and do at the Fair for all ages. Air Bounce Adventures returns and play-all-day wristbands are just $10 per child. New to the Fair, this year, is the horse pull at noon, at the grandstand. The Lake Scugog Historical Society will be hosting an exhibit on the back lawn of the Old Cartwright Town Hall, adjacent to the fairgrounds, with entry by the grandstand area. The Exhibit, featuring the history of the Fair and Agriculture in the area, opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 3 p.m. Old tools, a new video, historic trophies and more will be on display. Come out and support this historical fair now in its 157th year. Free admission. Gates open at 4 p.m. for the Demolition Derby and admission is just $15 per adult and children 5 to 12 are $5. Blackstock Fair, where all the action happens in one day! Don’t miss it!

Fair books are available online at www.blackstockfair.org or may be picked up at 13931 Old Scugog Road. Be sure to consider entering baking, canning, veggies, sewing or crafts. And there are lots of classes for children to enter as well. Check it out.

Wishing the best to Mark and Jennifer Graham as they have moved from Purple Hill to Eastern Ontario.

The thoughts of our community are with Brennan and Sarah Malcolm and family after the sudden death of their daughter, Callie. A special thank you to all those who have organized meals for the family over the next few weeks.
