PORT PERRY: Every December, the Scugog Public Library transforms into a winter wonderland, with the arrival of the Bakersville Gingerbread Village. This cherished annual event, held in the Kent Farndale Gallery, opens its doors on December 7th and runs through to January 5th, offering free admission to visitors from near and far.
The Bakersville Gingerbread Village is more than just a display, it’s a celebration of community creativity and holiday cheer. Members of the community contribute their gingerbread masterpieces which are then carefully arranged by a dedicated volunteer committee. The result is a whimsical village, complete with moving animations, artificial trees, snow, and charming figurines to captivate visitors of all ages.
“It’s like stepping into a Christmas storybook,” said Amanda Lee, a visitor from Toronto. “The attention to detail is incredible. My kids were mesmerized by the little trains and the twinkling lights.”
The village has become a holiday tradition for many families, not just in Scugog but across Ontario and beyond. A guestbook at the event reveals visitors from as far away as Germany, Australia, and England. Many of them make a day of their visit, enjoying lunch at local restaurants, shopping in downtown Port Perry, and strolling along the scenic waterfront.
While the event is a highlight of the holiday season, it doesn’t come without its challenges. Organizers work tirelessly to coordinate the display, ensuring every gingerbread house is showcased to its best advantage. Regardless of the hard work, the payoff is evident in the smiles and wide-eyed wonder of the visitors.
“We’ve been coming here for years now,” shared Karen Miller, a resident of Whitby. “It’s the perfect way to kick off the holidays. We love seeing how the village evolves each year.”
The Bakersville Gingerbread Village is not just a feast for the eyes, it’s a testament to the spirit of the season. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning fan, this enchanting display promises to exceed expectations and leave you filled with holiday cheer.
