People have this idea; when you reach a certain age, you have to stop doing things. Maybe you’ve been told, “You’re too old to do that,” or “Act your age.” If you believe you’re “too old” to exercise, you are sorely mistaken. Most of the people I work with are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and better quality of life. Age isn’t a limitation to success. Having the right attitude makes all the difference.
At 88 years young, my friend Helen started at our gym for the very first time. She told me, “I don’t want to slow down yet!” Also, she has an active social life and enjoys going to the symphony and travelling.
At 83 years young, Ed (a.k.a. the running man) has been a long-time member. He holds the record on the stepmill at 45 minutes. He plays golf, mows his lawn and spends time with his great-grandchildren.
At 88 years young, Dee is a training client and works with my mom three days a week. She is socially active and enjoys art. She has a determined attitude and has increased her level of weight at the gym.
My friend Carol is 84 years young. She’s been a training client for six years. She strength trains once a week. She lives on her own and has an active social life. She often says while she’s exercising, “If it’s not a challenge, then why do it?” You’ll often see her setting the pin a little higher.
It's obvious age isn’t a limitation. Even so, you can decide if “you’re too old” to do something. However, if you want to stay healthy and active as you age, there’s no reason why you can’t.
