KAWARTHA LAKES: The Cambridge Street United Church is hosting a Dramatic Reading of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens on Wednesday, December 4th at 7 p.m.
The script is an abridged version of 'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens. It is available to us courtesy of CBC Radio, developed for their public readings across the country in support of local shelters and food banks. While no longer partnering with these events, CBC continues to encourage people to organize readings in their own communities to support local agencies.
The script is divided into five staves, one for each of the readers. In between the staves, the Brass Ensemble will provide seasonal music.
The evening's host is Max Radiff, with Director Jessie Kennedy, Readers: Dave Illman, Warren Frank, Sylvia Keesmaat, Nancy Payne, Brian Walsh and music by the Brass Ensemble of the Kawartha Concert Band.
This event is a fundraising event for A Place Called Home (APCH).
APCH is a local agency that:
• helps people who find themselves homeless get back on their feet so they are able to move forward and obtain a stable residence.
• helps those at risk of becoming homeless keep their homes
remains involved with previous guests through ongoing •communication and support to prevent situations that could put them at risk of becoming homeless again.
Representatives from APCH will be present to accept donations by cash, cheque, or credit card and to provide receipts for tax deductions.
A Christmas Carol was first published in London on December 19th, 1843 and the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve. Dickens was deeply committed to urging action to address the problem of poverty and decided he could accomplish more with a deeply felt Christmas narrative than pamphlets and essays.
In 1849 Dickens began public readings of the story, which proved so successful he undertook 127 further performances until 1870, the year of his death.
A Christmas Carol has never been out of print and has been translated into several languages; the story has been adapted many times for film, stage, opera, and other media.
